Abstract
Background: There are reports of conflicting results regarding the relationship of subclinical hypothyroidism and serum lipid profile. Therefore the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and serum lipid profile based on the medical examination.

Methods: This study includes subjects who underwent medical examination and measured their serum thyroid function test, from January 1st to December 31th in 2006. (n=6041) Subjects with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, liver, renal and thyroid diseases were excluded, thereon, several aspects of serum lipid profile between patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (n=64) and control group (n=1591) were compared.

Results: We compared 64 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism with 1591 control subjects. The results of female subjects do not show any significant difference at all. With respect to male subjects, the result was statistically significant only in terms of triglyceride (control group 117.3¡¾64.9 mg/dL, subclinical hypothyroidism group 175.8¡¾104.2 mg/dL, p=0.0004) and thyroid stimulating hormone positively correlates with triglyceride (r=0.1636, P<0.0001).

Conclusion: The study came to an conclusion that there is no significant difference in serum lipid profile between patients with subclinical hypothyroidism and control group in both genders.
